What is Anchor Text?
The clickable text of a hyperlink — the words a user reads and clicks on.
Anchor text gives search engines context about what the linked page is about. A link with anchor text 'AI website builder' pointing to your homepage tells Google your homepage is about AI website builders. Descriptive anchor text is significantly better than generic ('click here', 'learn more') — both for SEO and accessibility (screen readers announce link text out of context). Don't over-optimize: anchor text that's exactly your target keyword across many backlinks looks unnatural and can trigger spam penalties. Vary it: brand name, descriptive phrase, related keyword, sometimes just the page title.
