Slug best practices

  • Lowercase only. Mixed-case URLs are treated as different URLs by some servers, leading to duplicate-content SEO bugs.
  • Use hyphens, not underscores. Google treats hyphens as word separators; underscores as part of one word.
  • Strip stopwords sparingly. "The Ultimate Guide to X" → "ultimate-guide-to-x" (keep prepositions for readability) or "ultimate-guide-x" (strip aggressively for brevity). Either is fine.
  • ASCII only. Accents, emojis, and non-Latin characters render but URL-encode poorly. Convert "café" → "cafe" for clean URLs.
  • Aim for 3–6 words. Long slugs (10+ words) hurt sharing and look spammy. Short slugs (1 word) often duplicate.
  • Include the primary keyword. The URL is one of the signals Google uses to understand the page's topic.
